Chris Barton

Write What You’d Love to Learn
Assembly Performance

“Write what you know,” the saying goes. But based on Chris’s experience writing both playful picture books and rigorously researched nonfiction, he encourages audiences to improve their own writing—or their students’ writing —by giving the not-yet-known a try. In his 30- to 60-minute presentation, Chris provides an overview of himself and his work as an author, reads from one of his books, and uses the book as a jumping-off point for further discussion with students about research, revision, and/or collaboration. Chris can also perform a full-day version for educators and librarians.

Grades: PK-up
Audience Limit: No size limit, but at least a 25:1 ratio of students to teachers or administrators must be present for the duration of the presentation
Connections: Literary Arts, Storytelling/Theatre, Social/Emotional Learning

Writing Workshop: Research and Revision
Workshop

Available in single-session and multi-day formats, these fun workshops give students an opportunity to work with an author to improve their own writing — and to inspire lots more down the road. Chris offers prepared workshops based on his books Whoosh! and Mighty Truck. Chris is also happy to customize workshops in order to meet the needs of the school/teachers, using other books to zero in on techniques that students can continue to use long after he has left the school!
