    Wooden O: An Interactive Sensory Adventure
    Classroom Performance/Workshop

    Imagine a professional theatre performance created just for children ages 3 – 6. What ingredients would it have? Endless possibility, adventure, mystery, music, a feast for the senses, and a few thrilling surprises! The Wooden O is an empty space where the audience’s imagination helps the actors tell the story. Once kids ages 3-5 step into Brave Little Company’s Wooden O, they’ll be on an imaginative quest to help Robin Goodfellow, a prankster with a little magic up his sleeve. They’ll engage their senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell as they follow Robin’s map to find a mysterious flower. A fully interactive play with live sound effects, Wooden O invites students on an imaginative journey – without leaving the classroom! This play features one performer and one stage manager. It can be performed in English, Spanish, or both. Tech needs are minimal, and our tech rider is available upon request. Performance

    Wish You Were Here
    Classroom Workshop

    Use your senses and your imagination to go on an imaginary journey! A mysterious box arrives in your classroom. It contains the sights, smells, sounds, and sensations of a field trip your students can go on without leaving the classroom! This program was designed specifically for students with learning differences and disabilities. It is also a powerful tool for beginning speakers of English, because it engages students with vastly different levels of English fluency. The program is always available in English and Spanish. Schedule permitting, we may be able to offer it in Mandarin, Pashto, Urdu, or Arabic.

    First Day, Nueva Escuela

    Nueva Escuela is the story of a girl who overcomes her fear of starting class at a new school (and of reading) by writing herself into the stories. Tía Elena wants to make sure Xiomara is ready for her first day at a new school, but no matter what story she suggests they read, Xiomara always finds a reason not to like it. And now there’s just one day left before school starts! The play is easily understood by speakers of English and Spanish, and its interactive storytelling helps audiences find compassion and empathy for the stories of others.     Git on Board! The Life of Harriet Tubman

    Hope Shiver illustrates through story and song the life of famous abolitionist Sojourner Truth.     Connect the Dots with Math and Writing
    Assembly Performance

    Students learn about shapes and numbers as they create a story, count and connect dots to reveal a hidden picture. They discover how a picture or illustration, rather than words, can represent an entire story. The performance is ideal for the young audiences whose writing abilities may not be quite as developed as their drawing skills. Through the excitement and energy of storytelling, this presentation inspires your younger students to create their own stories and share them with others through their drawings. A handout will be available for students so that they can connect the dots again and share the story with their family and friends.

    Ready to Write By 4th Grade!

    Time Travel Bench

    History “reseats” itself when your students take a trip through Texas history on the Time Travel Bench. Teachers can suggest the historical content, plot, and/or storyline for the basis of the script to reinforce areas that their students may be struggling with, or have heavier importance on. At the end of the week, your students will have a rough draft of a script based on your Texas history lessons. After some editing and rehearsals, your students can perform for an audience of friends and family.

    American Indians Before and After European Explorers

    Through research and discussions, students will examine the lives of the American Indians in Texas before and after the European explorers. They will also begin writing the body for an expository essay rough draft.

    Texas Regions Travel Agency

    For two to three days, your students are on the marketing team for the fictitious Texas Regions Travel Agency. Their “job” is to promote one of the four geographic regions in Texas. Students improvise a commercial that highlights the attributes of the regions and explains why tourists should visit. They will also begin writing the body for an expository essay rough draft to persuade people to choose a Texas region for their next vacation.

    Texas History Comedy Game Show

    Talk about the perfect supplement to your social studies lessons! Chris and Rocket Megabyte (his robot dog) blast the dust off Texas history as they take students on a trip through time and across the Lone Star State. Learning is reinforced when a few students play against each other answering questions from the presentation. This program is based on his book, Rocket Megabyte’s Texas Adventure, and if booked in Fall 2022, you will receive a set of his books for free, which is a fantastic supplement for Texas history lessons.

    There’s a Wild Animal on the Playground
    Classroom Residency

    The gates of the local zoo were left open overnight and many of the animals escaped. Elementary students arrived at school to find a wild animal on their playground. Students need to transform the playground into an environment that mimics the animal’s natural habitat until the animals can be safely returned to the zoo. Students will research and discuss wild animals in the zoo. They will use their imaginations and knowledge to create an improvised scene about transforming the playground into a proper animal habitat. They will also begin writing the body for an expository rough draft.

    Stories told in this performance may include the following: “Grandma Spider Brings the Fire,” where Possum and Buz-zard tangle with fire until Grandma Spider teaches an important lesson; “First Robin,” in which a Lakota girl faces her troubles and gains self-assurance; “White Wolf,” the story of two Sioux children finding a mysterious protector; and “Coyote and the Rock,” a humorous Montana Salish tale which teaches respect for all. Storyteller and author Tim Tingle has written ten books based on the oral traditions of his native Choctaw Nation and his native Texas. His lively performances include Native American flute and drum music.

    Reading and Rhyming with Mother Goose

    Mother Goose encourages children to read nursery rhymes, write their own rhymes and practice rhyming words. Students will learn how to play the “Mother Goose Pretend Game” which encourages their imagination as they act out various rhymes. Rhymes come to life as Mother Goose’s delightful puppets Lamby, Mary, Goosey, Itsy Bitsy, and the Stinky Baby help demonstrate the traditional rhyme and teach how the rhyme might become a parody. Audience volunteers will be utilized to help act out several rhymes.

    Wild About Reading with Masai Maggie

    I Detect a Tale with “Imma Sleuth”
    Assembly Performance

    Margaret, a.k.a. Detective “Imma Sleuth”, will take junior gumshoes on an adventure to find a story in the library that she is supposed to tell. Using their powers of deduction, clues, a fingerprint matching book, and a secret code, the junior detectives will figure out which story Imma will finally tell! While hearing 3 exciting stories along the way, the Jr. detectives will find their list of suspects has dwindled down to just 3 possible choices. By breaking a secret code the name of the culprit book is revealed and Imma tells the story in the final bit of fun!

    This program abounds with humor and even a little magic. Students will want to seek out other titles by the authors presented as the Bookworm encourages children to become Bookworms themselves! Webster the Dictionary puppet, with the help of Margaret’s brilliant ventriloquism, will help teach children proper book care as well.

    Señorita Margarita’s Fiesta

    Celebrate Latino culture with Margaret Clauder, aka Señorita Margarita! Clad in a traditional Jalisco dress, her show features storytelling, “Martina the Beautiful Cockroach,” Latino arts and crafts including pinata and cascarones making, the dance La Raspa (the Mexican Hat dance), puppetry and ventriloquism.

    Maria Rosita the puppet helps teach students “La Cucaracha” in a hilarious rendition of the song and Mariachi Loco, a trumpet-playing marionette will bring the house down when his pants fall off! Children will have a new appreciation for the Latin culture.

    Weather Wonders with Meteorologist Maggie

    A science program about weather, the water cycle, and clouds. Children will find it fascinating to watch the various magic tricks that demonstrate steam, evaporation, snow, and ice, as they learn about the water cycle, clouds, tornadoes, and electricity.

    Cloudia the cumulonimbus cloud is Meteorologist Maggie’s puppet sidekick. She will come to life with Margaret’s skillful ventriloquism as the children learn about lightning, cumulonimbus clouds, and tornadoes.

    Water Cycle Puppetry: Bringing Science to Life

    Even the most engaging visual depictions and verbal descriptions of the water cycle are often not enough for students to truly understand how water changes between states of matter in our daily lives. In this active, hands-on residency, students will construct simple puppets of various designs in order to learn and demonstrate the water cycle through storytelling. Through these stories students will learn about the Texas state flower, tree, and other important things about our great state!

    Cinderella Meets the Muppets: Telling Fractured Fairy Tales with Puppets
    Classroom Residency

    This 5 day workshop is full of enthusiasm, excitement, and energy as students work on STAAR concepts of writing while following patterns! Students will develop writing skills, creativity, and an understanding of compare & contrast concepts while fracturing existing fairy tales. This hands-on adventure will have students analyzing, writing, and enhancing their stories through puppet building. The culmination of their work will be displayed through a puppet performance for their peers.

    Mime and Masks
    Classroom Residency

    Explore the ancient art of mime through this engaging two-day residency led by storyteller and educator Dru Woods. As students are introduced to the silent world of mime, they will discover the challenge and fun of portraying a character, expressing an emotion, or telling a story by using physical movements alone. On the first day of the residency, Mrs. Woods will lead students through the history and use of mime in theater and will teach them the basic techniques of dramatic physical expression. The students will then create their own masks to be used in a mime performance. On the second day, the students will compose an original mime skit and perform it for their classmates!

    This program emphasizes ocean food chains/webs, photosynthesis, and conservation. Recommended for groups of 150-350. Features “I’m a Mako Shark,” “Living in a Wetland,” “We Can Bring Them Back,” and more. This program fulfills a wealth of TEKS and is a great review before the Science STAAR.
